One person is in custody and three others are on the run after an alleged assault on police in North Queensland.

One person is in custody tonight and three others on the run accused of an appalling assault on police in North Queensland. Only nine news has the moment projectiles start flying and officers injured while trying to make their arrest.

We're about to be dancing on us. They're smashing our cars. What you can hear is a Townsville police officer under attack after coming across a stolen Mazda. We have got that vehicle in the street. I've got an officer on foot. They are throwing the things up.

Hurling huge rocks according to police thrown by one of the occupants through their cars glass windows denting the side door. More crews called in to help but intercepted. They say the Mazda had fled heading straight towards an inbound police car.

Mazda has just come up to me. Don't be behind you. He'll cover you. They're the unit complex at the back of where we are. If you pull in there we'll be able to get rescued. Police eventually able to get the upper hand telling nine news as they took the alleged driver into custody.

Others from inside the Mazda continued to pelt them with rocks. Now unfortunately two officers were hurt. One came away with a hand injury. The other was hit in the leg by one of those rocks. We know a 22 year old man.

He has now been charged with burglary. Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle as well. A serious assault of police. He's going to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday but mere police say they are still looking for three other people.

They believed they were involved in this incident. They still have to find that stolen Mazda. So anyone who knows anything about this incident should come forward and help police with their investigation.

A shocking attack. Thanks for that Lily. .
